Semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm Technologies Inc. has boosted its investments in extended reality and the metaverse with a new European unit, the company announced in a filing.

  • Dubbed as Extended Reality (XR) Labs, the unit will take charge of activities involving XR research and design, engineering, and key technology development areas including advanced hand tracking and gesture control.
  • The new labs will also focus on 3D mapping and localization services, multi-user experiences, and image recognition. Software development kits will also provide access to foundational technology such as object and geo-tracking.
  • Qualcomm Europe Inc. President Enrico Salvatori cited the growth opportunities of extended reality, along with the area’s “rich” leadership in research and design, noting that the labs will be a major contributor to worldwide XR.
