Tuesday’s presidential debate was marred by conspiracy theories, misinformation, and false claims, according to FactCheck.Org. The Tuesday debate, held in Ohio, saw Trump meet former Vice President for the first time as they argued in a roughly manner. Here are the top misleading statements and accusations from both candidates:

  • On COVID-19 and Control
    • Biden and Trump gave misleading impressions on when to expect COVID-19 vaccine
    • Biden-Trump did not try to send experts to China early during the Coronavirus pandemic. False. Trump did
    • Biden-Trump decided not to give masks to schools because it is not a national emergency. Manipulation. While FEMA stopped reimbursing states for masks, Department of Health and Human Services will provide schools with 125 million cloth masks.
  • On Healthcare and Healthcare Insurance
    • Trump-Biden advocates for Medicare for All Plan. False. He never did
    • Biden-10 million people lost their employer-sponsored insurance during the pandemic. Manipulation. The study he relies upon said all but 3.5 million would regain insurance.
    • Biden. Trump’s Supreme Court nominee has written that she thinks the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional. Manipulation. Misleading, although the nominee faulted in 202 opinion ruling.
    • Trump-“Drug prices will be coming down 80 or 90%”. Manipulation. The impact of the executive order is not clear.
  • On Economy
    • Biden-Billionaires have become $300-400 billion wealthier during the pandemic. Manipulation. He is referring to a study that ignored the financial losses by wealthy stockholders early in the pandemic.
    • Trump- I have “brought back 700,000 manufacturing jobs.” False. 237,000 have been lost.
    • Trump-Has “given big incentives for electric cars.” False. Has tried eliminating programs that encourage manufacturing
    • Biden-U.S. has a higher deficit with China. False. The deficit is lower
    • Trump-Relaxing the Obama administration’s stringent fuel economy standards would make cars $3,500 cheaper. Manipulation. Going by administration’s analysis, it is inflated.
  • On Climate Change
    • Trump-Climate change does not play a role in California’s wildfires. False. Scientists say it is.
  • On Race, Violence, and Abuse
    • Biden-There was 15% less violence when he was in office than now. Manipulation. Violent crime has dropped under Trump’s presidency
    • Trump-Biden called military members “stupid bastards.”-Manipulation. Biden used those words addressing troops overseas in 2016, but his campaign said it was a joke.
    • Trump-Biden Black Americans “super predators.” False. This was a remark by Hillary Clinton. 
    • Trump-Does do not think that Kellyanne Conway, his former White House counselor, said, “riots and chaos and violence help his cause.” True. Conway said it
  • On legacy
    • Trump- Has been endorsed by Portland sheriff, and Biden has no support from law enforcement. False. Information is misleading
    • Trump-Biden forgot college name. Manipulation. University official said Biden was referring to announcing his senate bid on campus.
  • Election Integrity
    • Trump- Mail-in voting already resulted in large scale fraud. Urged his supporters to watch very carefully as they go into the polls. False. There has been no evidence of fraud
