Polysilicon spot prices are up by 20% from levels recorded earlier in the year, Digitimes Asia reported.
- Spot market prices have climbed to $36 to $37 per kilogram, with Chinese suppliers hiking prices to $30 per kilogram from $10 per kilogram earlier this year. Industry sources attributed the surge to market manipulations or hoarding.
- The upward movement will not have a significant impact on silicon wafer makers which have long-term contracts with suppliers. Several firms indicated that current agreements are valid until the end of the year or early 2021.
- Silicon wafer vendors may be forced to raise rates as international suppliers are highly expected to increase quotes next year. The costs may be passed on to foundry houses.
