Medtronic and Apollo Hospitals announced the first procedure in Asia-Pacific with HugoTM robotic-assisted surgery system, according to a press release by Medtronic on Monday.
- The robotic clinical prostatectomy procedure was performed on September 17 by Dr. N Ragavan, consultant urologist, uro-oncologist, and robotic surgeon, at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, Chennai, India.
- Dr. Ragavan stated that In India, nearly 70% of surgeries are performed as open procedures—he felt confident that the Hugo RAS system would change that statistic and bring the benefits of minimally invasive surgery to more patients than ever before.
- Dr. Ragavan further stated that he is proud to launch a new era of possibility for the hospital and the patients as they serve with the first clinical procedure in the region with the system.
Robotic-assisted surgery as a form of minimally invasive surgery provides the potential for fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, faster return to normal activities, and smaller scars.
