Compounds in cannabis can prevent Covid-19 infection by blocking the entry of virus that causes Covid-19 into the cells, according to a report by Forbes on Tuesday.

  • Researchers affiliated with Oregon State University found out that two cannabinoid acids popularly found in hemp varietals of cannabis, cannabigerolic acid, or CBGA, and cannabidiolic acid, can bind into the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2.
  • The compounds bind the spike protein preventing the virus from gaining entry into the cells and causing infection, more so providing new channels to prevent and treat the disease.
  • Researchers stated that orally bioavailable with a long-standing history of safe human use have the possibility of preventing and treating infection by SARS-CoV-2.
  • The research study led by Richard van Breemen stated that the cannabinoids studied are common and readily available.

Van Breemen stated that CBDA and CBGA prevented the action of emerging variants of the virus that causes Covid-19. The spike protein is the same element of the virus targeted by Covid-19 vaccines and antibody treatments.
