Tech giant Apple was recently awarded a patent for a waveform design for its light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system with closely spaced pulses, according to a report.
- The patent covers an optical device with a light source, a scanning mirror, a detection sensor, and other characteristics. Timothy Arcuri also mentions that the distance to the target scene may range from tens of centimeters to hundreds of meters.
- A UBS analyst says the patent could put the company one step closer to the Apple car.
- Fully autonomous vehicles depend on sensors with a long-range to detect objects at a distance of hundreds of meters away. This suggests an automotive application for the patent.
- UBS maintains a Neutral rating and $115 price target on Apple.
Apple (AAPL:Nasdaq) shares are up 1.19%.
